Will We Ever Know Why the US Invaded Iraq?
Condoleezza Rice recently stated that she is proud of our nation’s decision to invade Iraq. She also apparently believes that the idea of being a suicide bomber has lost its appeal for some individuals and further stated that some people may now be questioning “whether Osama Bin Laden ought to be the face of Islam” ( http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aIefxPxr_Gw8&refer=worldwide .)
How sad to see Ms. Rice still spinning for the Bush administration – even after all these years. How sad to hear that she is still unable to adequately justify the undeniable and unforgiveable mistake that is Iraq. How sad to hear her talk about suicide bombers and Iraq in the same sentence, as if we all do not know that suicide bombers existed well before the invasion of Iraq – and were responsible for the attacks on the US on September 11, 2001. How sad to hear Ms. Rice continue to skillfully and matter-of-factly include Osama Bin Laden in this mix – because as we were all told - if it weren’t for Osama Bin Laden and his suicide bombers – the invasion of Iraq – would not have been necessary.
I have only one question for the Bush administration, its representatives, and current and former members of the US Congress and US Senate - and that question is – will Americans ever find out exactly why – the US invaded Iraq? Will the answer be found in currently protected archives or reports which will be available to the public, say, fifty or one hundred years from now? Oh, I heard all the ‘reasons’ that you all gave to justify the invasion of Iraq - I listened very carefully to the arguments and I suspected all along that the greatest spin effort in American history was taking place. And so I must ask – will Americans ever know what caused representatives from governments, intelligence agencies, and military agencies around the world to agree to conspire to invade Iraq – in such a hasty and disastrous fashion? Will we ever discover – exactly what the Bush administration and governments around the world - didn’t want us to know? What – were you all – so afraid of?
I grant that the run-up to Iraq was great theater. Speculation ran and is still running wild – about oil, Al-Qaeda, ‘neocon’ plans, Iran, Israel, and someone called – Curveball. We had bad or cherry-picked ‘intelligence’ from otherwise competent and experienced personnel. We had rumors about G.W. Bush wanting to finish what his father had started. We had non-believable lie after astonishing lie after – simple lies.
On this Fourth of July – a day of celebration of our nation’s founding and history - I would like to tell the Bush administration and current and former members of the US Senate and US Congress - that I hope to live long enough to hear the real explanation - about the invasion of Iraq. Thousands upon thousands of innocent Iraqis slaughtered, thousands of American and coalition soldiers killed and injured, debt that will need to be paid by future generations of Americans - and Ms. Rice is still talking about suicide bombers and Osama Bin Laden? I didn’t buy it then – and I’m not buying it now, either.
This American never believed that the level of ‘incompetence’ could possibly be that high – in America – or within so many national and international government and military agencies. My faith in the individuals dedicated to the survival of this and other nations – is and was always too high – for me to believe – that the Bush administration’s tales – could possibly be true.
An undeniable, large, global conspiracy was assembled for the sake of protecting – ‘something’ – and it has nothing to do with oil, Osama Bin Laden, or Saddam Hussein.
Sorry, Ms. Rice. The snake oil – won’t work. Perhaps someday, Americans will better understand – why you lied – to us - and to the world.
